Well, hello there little buddy! Welcome to my blog.

I live a fairly humdrum life divided between my art studio, and my night jerb. Occasionally I punctuate my existence here with a bit of revelry and merrymaking, ballywho as well as the oft enjoyed shannanigans. When such instances arise I will document them for posterity and your pleasure.
Enjoy.....

first thursday art walk time. jaime roy and i braved the elements to check out what was going on in pioneer square. we got started down at the lawrimore project.

there we found a couple instillations of note. the first, a dissent, was a pile of rocks each etched with a word from a critique the artist received.

the second, flight path, was a mock-up of an anti-aircraft gun firing a number of war planes and helicopters into an adjacent wall.

moving on to soil, some great little optical fun with mirrors with parts of the reflective backing removed. when the light shines down on it, there is a reflection of the pattern above, and a mirrored shadow below. pictures don’t do them justice. they’re up through the 28th so go see them yourself.

at la familia, there were a number of “trophies” which were heads of different animals of prey mounted on plaques and hanging from the wall. each animal was constructed entirely out of wire. think they may have been my favorites all day. jaime and i even debated getting one and sharing it.

at g. gibson, there were some cool cantilevered contraptions that suspended themselves within bell jars and onto walls. the little engineering geek in me loved them.

the award for LMAO was right around the corner. far too much to document. basically they were blown up notebook paper with graphs and diagrams charting all sorts of hilarious tidbits of life. the best was this diagram of the seven deadly sins and an example of the combinations of the two. enjoy

at 619 western there was just one artist that caught my eye. all encaustic paintings on old books and maps etc. here’s one i especially liked.

on our way back to jaime’s for some tasty soup to warm our bones, we came across a great bit of fall night light outside the train station and had a little photo shoot.

and then, about 5 min after arriving home on my bike, a ridiculous thunder/lightning/rain/hail/windstorm blew in and through. soooooo, glad i didn’t get stuck out in this!

woo to the hoo! picked my bike up at counterbalance after they finely tuned my lovely new machine.

so here are some photos of the project. first things first, the old bike and with the addition of some aircraft stripper and elbow grease:

it had a bit of surface rust so i had to break out the sandpaper and get after it before priming. le resulte:

once the main color was done, i then accented the lugs with a different color (“color”s being somewhat a misnomer as they were both different greys.)

i also, dis-assembled the brakes and matched them to the base-coat. and the final product after a new handle bar, post levers, brake levers, fenders and a little tuning:

not sure how i feel about the blue. i think i’m going to swap out the grips and the saddle and go with white on both. then i’m pretty sure the wheels are gonna set things off with a little color, still undecided.

two months, no entries.

okay i know, some things have happened. had a great memorial day weekend with zach and jess and jeffrey coming into town for mike and nisa’s wedding (photos on facebook).

the next week, my bike got stolen from my apartment building (bastards!) a few days later my other bike snapped its chain on my way to work. had to jog it home 3 miles to get my car to get to work on time. then my car needed to go into the shop. so that was my crappy week.

since then, i have chopped my hawk, grown my beard, and started the hunt to find new diggs and a new jerb. in jerb related news, brian finally got one (YAY!) but is still moving out in two weeks (by friend/neighbor). I’m going to move in with roy (cousin) and shannon (friend) soon as we all agree on a place.

i found an old 10 speed on craigslist that i bought of a charming british couple. i’ll be picking it up from the shop tomorrow (pics to follow).

I also have one of my works being exhibited at the International Peace Museum in Dayton Ohio. here is a link:
http://www.artenade.com/ohio/frontpage.aspx

sorry for the lack of upkeep. i’ll be better in the future.
promise

so this morning i am riding my bike to the studio when i got hit by a car. i tried to stop. she did not (didn’t see me). we made contact. i tucked and would like to think rolled but i believe it was more like flying. although with how slowly time was passing, my thought once i had cleared the car but had yet to land was “that went well”
if your imaginations are racing i have made some playful drawings to further make light of how close it was to all being over (i only entertained that one for a millisecond or so.)
this first one is me on my bike. the second one is a bird’s eye view of the brewing storm. what follows is a crude heads on of the car and my travels onto and over it. then some details of my accident report.
enjoy!

good times huh? here’s one of me after the accident with my scrapes and bruises. swelling was pretty immediate, as was the arrival of the firemen. they set about checking my vitals and then giving me the thumbs up. one of em asked if i had played football cause i looked like i knew how to take a hit. good skill to have i guess, hope i won’t need to employ it again anytime soon.

oh and to all of you cynics out there, no i’m not suing. the lady who was driving is gonna pay for my bike to get fixed so all is well.

“life moves pretty fast....”
Ferris Bueller

so instead of christmas presents, my siblings and I decided to just all get together for a long weekend and hang out. since my brother justin has two little girls (isabella and giavanna) we decided not to make them travel and we’d spend the time in sun valley idaho. this year it just so happened to be my birthday while we were there.

i headed out on wednesday and got picked up by justin and we headed out and grabbed some beers and caught up. he just finished a huge job (engineer) at a geo-thermal power plant start-up in turkey that went months over the estimate.

after beers, we headed back to his house were his wife gabby and our mom were playing with the girls. had a lovely pasta dinner and then sat outside and chatted as the sun went down.

the next day justin and i had big plans. i have been biking a fair amount as my source of transport in the city so i thought we could go for a nice mountain bike ride. mistakenly, i had bragged about how about how huge my calves are now (i always try and catch up to my big brothers who both outweigh me by like 60-70 pounds of muscle). well justin picked out a nice trail and we had a blast. from there, lunch and beers. from there, the gun store for ammo. now, i am not what you call a gun freak. in fact, i just shot my first gun a year or so ago with my brother. but now i think i may be a little more in touch with the kids that we were when we ran around moscow and blew sh!t up playing army.

after all the fun, we headed back to the house to stern looks from from our mom, gabby and even isabella. after making the peace, it was time for dinner so we went to a really good pizza place nearby (nearby, that’s kinda funny, EVERYTHING is nearby)

first son matt and his wife brenda and the kids ryan braden and bella were due to arrive in at 2 am so we stayed up and watched movies till they got in.

the next morning, after breakfast we wanted to go on a hike. we loaded the whole gang up and headed out to the hills (behind the house, see, EVERYTHING really is nearby).

after a little ways, justin ryan and i blazed our own trail to the ridge line while everyone else stayed on more level ground.

after the hike, it was time to get
down with the celebration. being
my birthday, i got to work on the
cocktails. matt got to work on
dinner and gabby on dessert. i
made scratch margaritas and
for dinner there was carne asada
tacos and fish tacos. dessert was
homemade oreo ice cream. a bit
of a rainstorm rolled through so
matt ended up barbecuing and
taking a shower at the same time.

well worth the sacrifice in our minds.

after dessert it was poker time. and scotch time. justin brought back a nice bottle from his travels to celebrate the job’s completion, my birthday, our belated christmas, etc.
lots of funny stories recounted. gabby even brought up one or two that i am sure my unconscious mind had forcibly suppressed. thanks gabs.

saturday morning was the day we had decided to head out to a cabin in the woods. groceries and beer on the way out of town and then diverted ourselves on the trip with the standard road trip fare. if you’re thinking “i spy” and sing-a-longs, you are off the mark a bit. more like, each kid to his own iPod and then parents to the sisyphean task of getting them to make conversation and enjoy family time. we did have a nice little stretch where we found that ryan is excellent at guessing riddles. we stopped at a viewpoint shortly thereafter and learned he is not as skilled at climbing trees (i am not posting any pictures here to save his embarrassment).

once to the cabin, and after settling in, we went for a walk up and down the road. forgive me if i took to many pictures of isabella but i have a bit of a soft spot for her.

the rest of the day was spent hanging
out around the cabin and relaxing,
playing cards, playing chess, listening
to justin play guitar, laughing, drinking.

wonderful evening.

in the morning after breakfast, we
headed down to a glacier feed lake
for a little stroll. what it ended up being
was my nephews joining the polar bear
club. justin said the lake still had ice on
it just a week or so before. braden was not to be put off and ryan shortly followed. the rest of us shivered just watching.

we shared one more night together back
at justin and gabby’s before our wonderful
trip came to a close. matt brenda and the
kids called it in early because they were
going to leave at 4 am. but before they
would leave we had a little photo shoot of
the diedrick boys including a calf pose-
down and a foot show (side note: diedrick
feet are not attractive, no matter how
much love and tenderness they see)

so, my day off was a flurry of excitement. i spent the morning the way i usually do, in the studio. didn’t seem like an exceptionally nice day at 7 am, but once i got on my bike in the afternoon to head home it was flippin’ gorgeous.

i met up with alison at my place to go grab a bite to eat before my tattoo appointment. we headed down to maggies bluff to take in the scenery of elliot bay. quite the nice afternoon.

from there we headed to slave to the needle in ballard where john fitzgerald would be giving me my first tattoo.

(check out his portfolio HERE)

so the plan had been to get my first tattoo on my left inner arm, then, my next appointment (supposedly late june) would be for my second tattoo on my right inner arm. well, when we showed up, john said why don’t we just do ‘em both now. HELL YEAH! what a fantastic idea.

a couple winces, and two hours later and here is what you get:

right
arm

left
arm

the one with the chisel is a quote from Michelangelo. it means:

it is well with me only when i have a chisel in my hand.

the script comes from his own handwriting that i “tirelessly” recreated (read: spent an afternoon in the library examining the differing characteristics of the 15 different letters in the quote).

the one with the hammer is an excerpt of a quote from Rodin, which reads:

...devoured (consumed) by the fire of his own creation.

i did the same thing with that one in using the artist’s own handwriting. i think that things came out very nicely. i’m very excited for them to be all nice and healed and show-off-able. and then also to surprise my mom with them (so if you know rosemary, NO TELLING!)

so the day now comes for the seattle erotic art festival and wouldn’t you know it? no cameras!

well, here’s what i think of the no camera
policy. actually, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

we started off at my apartment with some
pre-festivity cocktails and such. i got to
see my cousin ashley for the first time in
5 months (she’s been in vietnam.)

so from there, we got going to the show and
meet up with with some more friends. at this
point, words become a bit difficult to describe
things. as we entered a man, in white heels, a
white top hat, white cuffs, and a white banana-
hammock greeted us and provided us with
surveys to fill out.

before being able to put that little image in a box and lock it a very nice lady approached and said “vulva?”
nice lady, no top, just an apron, holding a tray of chocolates in the shape of little....wait for it, yes vulvas. i’ll be damned, i love chocolate! as i reach in she teases the goodies away.
“may i feed it to you?”
what a great party

from here, we spread out to see the work of which there was a great deal. some of it quite good, some of it quite funny, and some of it.... i still don’t have the words for.

brief noteworthy occurrences and instillations:

~a light table made of wax phalluses all glowing blue;
~naked people being decorated with slices of food;
~a painted lady crawling around the space on her hands and knees on a leash;
~a handcuffed man who manages to disrobe himself;
~numerous burlesque performances;
~the most insanely talented pole-dancer ever;
~and an unending stream of “all kinds” as i have been told “it takes”

apparently the jury thought my work was part of, what i cannot resist calling, the cream of the crop.

my piece titled “our shared disquiet” was voted 2nd place Best in Show! HOLLA

quite a coup if i do say so myself.

here are ashley and kim with two different reaction to the award. for all of you who missed it, i am sorry.

i will be posting what images are made available as they become so. stay tuned.....

I finally got all moved in and situated.

nice things about the new space:

the roof doesn’t leak in this part of the building;
i will never be cold in my new space (bit of a problem in the old space)

not so nice things:

july and august are going to be disgusting. my little loft (see attic) seems to be, on average, 20 degrees above the ambient temperature!

anywho, i am documenting these pieces from start to finish including all stages of model production so in a few months when i get them done i will post it all here so you can see the progress.

cheers!

so i know that this wasn’t the only snow day, but it was the first where i got cancelled from work and got to feel like a child again (cause that never happens) and play all day in the snow.

started off the day making a snowman on the roof of my building. he waved down on traffic (what little there was as the week rolled on) for day.

slipped and slid my way to my aunt kathy’s for dinner with the fam. got sideways the whole way home with a silly little grin on my face. spent some time in empty parking lots doing bro-dies. sorry, no footage of those.

met up with brian at the spectator. we left shortly thereafter to start a snowball fight with the crowd from mecca. dropped a ponytail-ed guy with a well placed shot to the head. it cause him to lose his footing and headbutt the bumper of the car he was next to. i laughed.

ran home to get a flask of whiskey and some beers. then tore through the neighborhood making friends with people who had sleds. trading booze (or wampum) for rides until our hunger grew to strong to resist.

tried to go to macmenamins for tots (sadly, closed.) tried jabu’s as well (sadly, last call already.) headed to the store to get a pizza and go home. on the way back from which i dropped brian with a fairly decent form tackle. he didn’t see it that way as i had dislocated his shoulder. i guess this is why adults get health insurance?
